Alex Kosis

Alex Kosis grew up in Center Township, PA, a suburban town about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh. He attended Center Area High School where he participated in football, basketball, and track. Additionally, he was a member of Habitat for Humanity, National Honor Society, and Student Council. In the fall of 2002, he was accepted to the Pennsylvania State University at University Park and began classes the following year.

Early in middle school, he developed an interest in architecture. After job shadowing through high school, Alex decided that Penn State's Architectural Engineering program would best combine his interest in architecture with his aptitude in the sciences. He is currently in his 9th semester of Penn State's integrated BAE/MAE ABET-accredited 5-1/2 year program and is scheduled to graduate in May of 2008. Since entering college, he has participated in the Student Society of Architectural Engineers (of which he was class representative during Sophomore and Junior years), the Architectural Engineering Institute, Intramural Soccer and Basketball, and various volunteer activities including THON canning, St. Andrew's Church food bank, Red Cross blood drives, and Shaver's Creek maple syrup harvest. He also worked as a banquet server at the Atherton Hotel during his sophomore and junior years.

In addition to his activities, Alex has gained acceptance to a variety of academic-based organizations including Dean's List in every semester, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Fraternity, Golden Key Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Eta Sigma.

He has supplemented his formal schooling with two summer co-ops. After his junior year, he worked with the Foreman Group, which is a construction management firm with offices in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. Here, he gained valuable insight to the coordination and management of the construction process. Last summer, he interned with Simpson, Gumpertz, & Heger in their Washington, DC office. He spent most of his time working in the fields of building forensics and building technology. This broadened his scope of knowledge by exposing him to different structural engineering disciplines and provided great real-world experience that could not have been obtained in a classroom setting.
